HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Emotional and physical health and well-being are promoted in our programming. Local organizations that work in this field, such as L’esprit, Granite Sports Medicine, Livingston Healthcare and the Movement Collaborative, have led workshops that emphasis health and wellness. Students are also given the opportunity to discover our region’s natural resources in workshops that combine education and outdoor adventure. This might involve biking the Livingston Trails, hiking to Pine Creek, or looking for Grizzlies up Tom Miner Basin.

Longitudinal studies show that helping young people increase community social networks can have a positive effect on the trajectory of their lives. Center of Disease Control 2018 data ranks Park County as having the 28th highest suicide rate per 100,000 population out of 2,727 US counties. Research from the National Association of School Psychologists shows that "school and community connectedness" can mitigate against the risk factors for suicide among youth.

Fostering this connectedness is one of the foundations of CSC programming. CSC’s CCD programming allows students to participate in activities with students not in their normal friend circle. The program serves as a conduit for talented community members to share their expertise with SGMS students and to express their commitment to the young people of their community. This care is not lost on the students. During one of our focus groups a student commented, “I think it is awesome that people are giving up their time to do something with us."

"CSC actively promotes pro-social engagement of our students with both their school and community. Research has shown this to be a protective factor that reduces youth suicide." Dr. Lynne Scalia , Superintendent, Livingston Public Schools.
