Cougar Career Day programing allows young people to make social connections in the community and see the actual work and careers that are available here. CSC works closely with Livingston School District administration and teachers in planning Cougar Career Days and volunteers and organizations from the community are active participants in the design and delivery of the program

Each grade level at SGMS has two separate Cougar Career Days (CCD) over the course of the school year. Thus, each student will experience 6 CCDs during middle school. On CCD students are divided into small groups with one teacher and CSC volunteer assigned to each group. Up to 10 different activities are planned for the day with different leaders and locations. Activities explore different Career Clusters, which are groups of careers that share common features. Jobs in the same cluster require similar knowledge or skill sets. At the end of the day, students return to their classrooms with their teacher and review the lessons learned. Students, teachers and all volunteers are surveyed after each Cougar Career Day and their feedback is used to refine our programming.

EXAMPLES OF PAST COUGAR CAREER DAY ACTIVITIES

“Lady Justice” Cougar Career Day Track: Twenty 8th grade students participated in a mock trial workshop developed to give exposure to the Law, Public Safety and Security Career Cluster. The students were divided into prosecution and defense teams. They spent the morning working with real lawyers to prepare their cases and in the afternoon they came together for the mock trial. The students were the lawyers and witnesses and Judge Nels Swandal presided over the trial.

“Snow Carnival” Cougar Career Day: The entire 6th grade spent this day at the Park County Fairgrounds. They rotated in small groups between 8 different stations for mini workshops featuring careers involving snow: Search and Rescue, Bridger Bowl Ski Area, Snow Science, Avalanche Forecasting, Trail Grooming, Mountaineering, and Snow Sculpting. We also had the all important hot chocolate station.
